When you decide to Elope in Asheville, NC in January, there’s a chance that you may end up with a snowstorm falling the night before, creating a winter wonderland. This Snowy and Romantic Winter Anniversary session saw just that!

Growing up in Georgia, I always loved a good snowfall. Every other year or so, we’d get a few inches but about every five years, we’d get a true southern snowstorm (6+ inches!) Yes, I know for some that’s not a lot of snow (my husband is a Wisconsinite after all), but for me, it was everything I dreamed of when I read books like Snow Treasure and The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

While snowfalls are hit or miss here in the south, this Snowy and Romantic Winter Anniversary session with Bethany and Daniel was truly magical! Throughout the week and into the night, the snow had been falling hard so by the time we made it up the mountain, we were looking at over a foot of snow.

We originally planned to hike a mile into the snow up a bald I had visited a few days prior, but the roads had yet to be cleared so like any good winter elopement or adventure session, we had a back-up plan ready to go! Ahead of time, I had researched which roads would likely remain open no matter the amount of snowfall.

Sticking close to the main roads where the snow had been cleared, we found magical spots with our cars waiting nearby to help warm us up between shots! Hand warmers also came in handy to help make the sub-zero weather feel a little more manageable.

At times we were totally socked in with low hanging clouds but it didn’t change my mind that if you Elope in Asheville, NC in the winter, you’re in for an amazing adventure.

If you Elope in Asheville, NC in the winter, having a full day available to allow for plans to change is a must. Oftentimes, as the day goes on, roads will be safer and low hanging clouds will rise but with the mountains, you never really know what it might be like. Having a photographer who is researching the conditions and helping you come up with backup plans ahead of time can help take the stress away.

Even if it’s not your wedding but just a Snowy and Romantic Anniversary Session, knowing that you’re in good hands and no matter what happens you’ll still get amazing shots can help set your mind at ease.
